VOC-Free Interiors
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in paints and finishes, releasing gases for years that can adversely affect indoor air quality. To combat this, The Desert Shack utilizes VOC-free products throughout its interiors:
Paints and Finishes: Walls and surfaces have been painted with VOC-free paints, ensuring a fresh and toxin-free atmosphere.
Floor Sealers: The concrete stamped flooring has been sealed with a natural, VOC-free sealer ensuring durability without compromising air quality. After extensive research, our paint and sealer comes from BioShield in New Mexico and we’ve used their products for about 20 years.
Tung Oil for Wood Surfaces: Our gorgeous, handmade live edge kitchen counters are sealed with pure tung oil, a natural drying oil derived from tung tree nuts. This eco-friendly finish penetrates deeply into the wood, offering a water-resistant and non-toxic seal that enriches the wood's natural beauty. We buy our hemp oil and tung oil at Real Milk Paint because they really know their stuff and have been around for 30+ years.
Organic and Hypoallergenic Bedding
Sleep quality is very important, especially for guests with health sensitivities. At The Desert Shack we want you to have a restful and safe sleep and put a great deal into our bedding.
Organic Mattresses: The bedrooms feature queen Avocado brand mattresses. Crafted from organic materials, these mattresses are free from harmful chemicals, reducing the risk of off-gassing and promoting better indoor air quality.
Bedding Materials: Sheets, pillowcases and blankets are made from certified organic fibers, offering a hypoallergenic, soft touch gentle on the skin. Bedding is sanitized using green products to further eliminate allergens. We NEVER use harmful dryer sheets or scented products which are said to contain carcinogens.

Kitchen & Laundry: We’ve worked hard to keep everything chemical-free and non-toxic but still very effective. From soap berries to counter sprays, we’ve sourced the best we could find on the market!

Energy Efficiency: We’ve worked to Incorporate energy-efficient appliances and are working toward renewable energy sources such as solar panels to reduce the property's carbon footprint.
Property: Invasive weeds are part of desert life. The Desert Shack sits on 1-acre where we use non-toxic, eco-friendly weed killer — white vinegar! On occasion we have the soil turned with equipment when it’s too dry or too much to pull by hand.
Wildlife: Our attitude is we’re in the desert and we are excited to see what visits us here! However, when the occasional desert rat or field mouse happens we use catch-and-release. When the 8-legged form of pest control is needed, we use an orange oil based product that you can find under the kitchen sink. And extra fly swatters are in the laundry room.
Misc: Water conservation in the desert comes with its challenges. As much as possible we embrace desert landscape (zero scape) including rocks, found objects and native plants. Everything is on timed irrigation to conserve water. This also provides a source of water to the local wildlife which is why you’ll see some of sprayers chewed on! And you may spot them at the “watering hole” by the side door getting a drink.
Waste Reduction: Using biodegradable products minimize waste, aligning with eco-friendly principles. The Desert Shack has reusable outdoor dinnerware and our trash bags are compostable.
